Unit 3: Forming and Supporting Claims

Warm-Up:
Independent reading check-up: Post-Its with a Purpose
Mini-Lesson:
Today we will continue writing the polished copy of our argument essay by putting together the drafts of each paragraph so that we can produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience.
We’ll know we have it when we’ve created a well-written argumentative essay that:
  • Clearly introduces the claims,
  • Acknowledges an opposing claim,
  • Organizes the reasons and evidences logically,
  • Supports the claims with logical reasoning and relevant evidence,
  • Uses accurate, credible sources,
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the topic,
  • Uses words and phrases to create cohesion,
  • Maintains a formal style, and
  • Contains correct capitalization, usage of grammar, punctuation, and spelling (CUPS).
Class Work:
Polished copy of the argumentative essay (Rescue Services)
Homework:
Work on your polished copy of the argument essay.
